What Do Freelancer Tools Cost in 2026? We Analyzed 603 Tools

The study in 30 seconds

Paid entryMedian €13.46/month — most under €25
Free trial159 tools, usually 14 days

Why this analysis?

"What is all of this going to cost me?" is the first question when you assemble a freelancer tool stack. Instead of guessing, we counted: we analyzed 603 tools from our editorially maintained database — from time tracking and accounting to AI and hosting — by pricing model and entry price. Guides, books and podcasts are deliberately excluded; this is purely about software tools. Prices are in EUR, since our directory is DACH-first, but the pattern travels.

The underlying database is published as an open dataset (CC BY 4.0), so the numbers are verifiable and free to cite.

The three pricing models: 61% offer a free option

The most important finding first: most freelancer tools cost nothing to try. Broken down by pricing model:

Pricing modelCountShare
Freemium (free base tier)28146%
Paid-only23038%
Permanently free9115%

Combined, 372 tools (61%) offer a genuine free way to use them — either permanently free or as a freemium base. For beginners that means a working starter stack of free tools is realistic before spending a single euro.

What does a paid tool actually cost?

For the paid tools where we recorded the exact entry price (56 tools), the median is €13.46/month. The €24.32 average is higher but misleading — a handful of enterprise tools up to €276/month pull it up. The distribution is more telling:

Price range (entry)Number of tools
under €10/month22
€10–25/month17
€25–50/month13
over €50/month4

The clear majority of entry plans cost under €25/month. These are entry prices, of course — higher tiers with more seats or features cost more, but for the typical solo freelancer the cheapest paid plan is usually enough.

Free trials: 159 tools, almost always 14 days

If you want to try before you buy, the odds are good: 159 tools offer a free trial. The most common and median length is 14 days — a de-facto industry standard. There are also 7-day quick trials and more generous 30-day windows. Freemium tools don't need a trial, since the free tier is permanent.

Prices by category: the full picture

It gets interesting per category. This is where you see where free options are the norm and where software is structurally more expensive. "Median entry" refers to the paid tools in that category with a recorded price.

The outliers, high and low

Cheapest is invoicing: invoicing tools start at a median of €4.16/month, time tracking and business accounts at around €5. The basics of self-employed life cost almost nothing.

Most expensive are SEO tools: €50/month median entry, and only one in five SEO tools has a free option at all. Marketing software is pricey too at nearly €40. That's no accident — both are categories where software translates directly into revenue, and vendors price accordingly.

Most free-friendly are AI/writing tools (94% with a free option) and job platforms (89%), where free access is practically standard. Least often free: SEO (21%), business accounts (36%) and accounting (38%).
